Our days have also been brightened by visits from friends. Linda and Rob, who live in Lakeland, came to visit on Friday. Dolly and Alan, from Orlando, spent the weekend aboard. Bev and Rich are vacationing in Florida and spent the afternoon on Saturday. The thing I miss most on this trip are friends and family, so these visits are especially dear.
Clearwater Beach is a large expanse of soft, white sand that feels so good under bare feet. It is lined with condos and hotels and dotted with umbrellas and sun lovers. When Dolly, Bev and I took a stroll along the beach, we saw a sword juggler and fire dancer, then passed a wedding reception under a large, white tent. We saw some dark clouds, but didn't take them seriously until we were being pelted by raindrops. We took shelter and listened to a band until the rain subsided.
The mission of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is the rescue and rehabilitation of sea creatures who are ill or injured. Winter is a resident dolphin who received a prosthetic tail at the facility. While at the aquarium, Dolly, Alan, Bob, and I watched a dolphin performance, observed an otter swimming on his back, watched sea rays swim in a shallow tank where visitors could touch their wings, and viewed a tank full of sharks and other fish. We also saw a movie about Winter, and another about the volunteers who watch sea turtle nests on the beach and guide the babies to the water when they become confused by the lights on shore and head the wrong way.
Turtle sculptures greeted us in many places around Clearwater . The golden one above is at the aquarium, and the small one is at the beach.
