After a 3-hour cruise on a smooth Lake Michigan, we passed the sculpture in the St. Joseph River and docked in the St. Joseph-South Basin Marina. I love it because it's one of the lower-priced marinas and it has a free, very fancy washer and dryer with more cycles than you can imagine. (We've been cruising too long, eh?) Bob loves it here because the trains cross a swing bridge adjacent to the marina, and he can see and hear them throughout the day.
Yesterday we bicycled around the town, and it's a good thing because the rain started last night and hasn't let up. Wind is expected to pick up today and keep building through the weekend, so it looks like it will be Monday before we move on to Michigan City. We are thinking about renting a car tomorrow with Rob and Judy and driving to Chicago for some sightseeing. Apparently, Chicago marinas are prohibitively expensive, so we think we'll just cruise through when we get there with Osprey. Today maybe we'll have dinner at the St. Joseph Yacht Club. Rumor has it the food is great, and they reciprocate with our Sail Club.
We are hearing that an electrical grid has been installed on the Illinois river to keep the Asian carp out of the Great Lakes. Passage over the grid is restricted to certain vessels. We qualify, but have to be towed (about 1/2 mile) for a cost of $600. Some of that we heard on the marine radio from the Coast Guard, some from websites and fellow boaters. We're trying to get more definitive information, I understand keeping the fish out, but how can they do that to boaters?
