Days 154 - 156 Harborwalk Marina, Destin, FL

Greetings from Destin Harbor! This bay on the the Gulf of Mexico is quite the party place with restaurants, bars, hotels, and marinas galore. There's an area of tourist shops adjacent to the marina with non-stop Christmas music and Christmas decorations mixed in with the palm trees which seems incongruous to this Michigander.

We sailed in on Sunday and everything but the bikini bar was hopping (too cold!!!)
Our slip is in HarborWalk Marina, one of the more expensive of our trip, so far. It has no restrooms, showers, or laundry, and no cute young dock hands to help tie up the boat. There are no finger docks, only a dock at our bow, so it's a challenge climbing over the rail to board - especially at high tide.

Then there was Riley, jumping up and down on his back legs imploring us to find him some grass. We zipped him into his life jacket, allowing Bob to use the handle to lift his hefty 80 pounds over the handrail. I guided him over the water and onto the dock while all 4 paws scratched in the air trying to find a foothold. Two episodes of that and Riley proved that he's smarter than we are. The next time Bob went to lift him, he pushed his paws between the caprail and the handrail, decreasing the vertical distance. The job still raises our blood pressure, but it's easier.

We took a walk on Monday and found the street beyond the marina full of empty store fronts. I don't know if it's the economy in general or the off season, or both.

The weather will hold us captive here for a few more days. We'll watch the pelicans fight for the leavings of the fishermen on the dock and land clumsily, like every time is their first. We'll listen to the rain beat down around us and hear the wind howl. Then we'll venture out again to see what awaits in Panama City.
